Open Source: A New Paradigm for Language Learning | MindShift
Via Scoop.it – Open learning news
The title of this article is a bit misleading – it’s not really about open source materials at all, but it’s an interesting commercial model for the use and reuse of online materials – from Cambridge University Press and a language teaching organisation called English360. The basic idea is that expert-authored CUP material is made available online in ‘disaggregated’ formats that English teachers can then edit to make them more suitable for their own students. The platform and the materials are free for individual educators, but there is a fee for students once they start using the materials. The target audience is professional adults, who are probably willing to pay – although I couldn’t ascertain the actual fees because there is an elaborate signup process before you can get any pricing info. There is also an ‘institution account’ option – again no info about pricing on the website.
